Its etymological origin comes from the Latin crispa which means “folds”, as it was considered a kind of thin pancake that is folded or rolled up.

Although the exact history is a mystery, what is known is that they were born in France and among the most popular stories it’s said that crêpes were born from an accident. It is said that a 13th-century housewife spilled some buckwheat dough on a flat cooking stone, resulting in that thin layer that is complemented by almost any ingredient.

A story of royalty

A well-known crêpe is the one called Suzette, in addition to being a very popular story, its origin also happened by accident.

It dates back to the end of the 19th century when the Prince of Wales, Edward VII, traveled to Monte Carlo and the chef of the place he frequented wanted to surprise him with some of this delicious dessert but when preparing the sauce, the ingredients were accidentally mixed with liquor and when placed in the pan began to flame, giving it that peculiar flavor.

Techniques to prevent my crêpes from sticking

It might seem easy, but when preparing these fine pancakes, we notice that it’s a challenge to avoid our crêpes from sticking to the pan. To prevent this delicious dessert from getting ruined, here we have some tips to avoid such an uncomfortable inconvenience:

  • Burnt pan? When your pan is burnt or unclean, this causes the batter to adhere easily to the food scraps.
  • Nonstick pan: We recommend you use this type of pan, ensuring its diameter measures 7 inches.
  • Prepare the pan: Wash the pan the night before, cover it with oil, and let it settle until the next morning. Before cooking, remove the oil with a dry rag and refined salt.
  • Grease it: Add margarine or butter and spread it through the pan’s surface. You can also add a tablespoon of one of these ingredients to the batter.

Now that you know the secrets to preventing your dessert from sticking, discover the recipe to prepare the perfect crépes. Let’s get started!
